By P. Quackenbush
After my 5 year old Ryobi 12V NiCad drill wouldn't hold a charge anymore, I started researching 18V impact drivers and drill combo kits.I found this Dewalt kit, and it's the best electric tool set I've bought. A few minor annoyances, but definitely a fantastic combo.Pros:The best part are the battery and charger technology. The batteries are very lightweight and feature an advanced lithium ion with circuitry that detects when the charge is low and prevents the tool from underdriving the battery (when the charge is low, the battery will act like it's completely dead). Most other manufacturer's tools will drive the tool slowly with a low battery, which is a major cause of battery death. Also, the batteries have very little phantom drain -- I can leave the tools unplugged for a few weeks, and the batteries hold their charge. The charger is incredibly lightweight, and features an intelligent charging circuitry that does not overcharge the batteries -- when they are charged, the charger shuts off, drawing no power. My old Ryobi charger would continuously charge the battery, overheating the battery and reducing its life. The impact driver is both powerful and fast. I can drive 3 inch deck screws into 2x4 lumber with no effort at all. There is an LED light that lights up when you turn the drill on to light up what you are working on. I've also used it to drive on/off small bolts around an engine. My guess would be that it only has about 40 ft/lbs of torque, so it will only work with low/medium torque bolts (you aren't going to remove lug nuts with it).The drill has a nice keyless chuck with a clicking lock so you can lock the bit securely in without holding the chuck in your hand and turning the drill on. Bits are much more secure than other keyless chucks without that feature. It's not as powerful as the XRP drill or an SDS drill, but for most wood/metal drilling, it's fantastic. The case is top quality plastic with metal locking clasps to close it. Very nice.Cons:It would be nice if the LED light stayed on for a few seconds after turning the tool off. You can still hold the button down lightly so the light will activate but the motor will stay off. There is a faint burning smell from the Impact driver motor when it starts up. I've tried another and it's the same, so I assume it's part of their design.Replacement batteries are expensive, but the two batteries that come with the kit are as good as the day I got them 10 months ago. If you're a pro, you probably want the XRP batteries, which are heavier but hold twice the charge.

By J Schauf
For those of you who care, this kit comes with the lower amp hour batteries (DC9181), not the yellow topped XRP (DC9180) batteries shown in the photo with the drill, driver and charger.

By Zaine Ridling
For some reason I thought this tool would be loud, would take a long time to charge, would be used, and would be damaged upon receipt. At least that's according to some reviews. I got the tools I ordered, in the right case, new, and they work better than expected! I read about the 826 impact driver in Family Handyman magazine and they loved it, but said it was loud. It's not. Heck, even driving 4" deck screws into treated wood, it's quieter than my regular 8-amp corded drill. For about $30 more, this kit throws in the screwdriver which gives you a second battery. That makes this a great bargain by any measure for a lithium-ion powered tool. So far I've built a deck for a shed and remodeled a garage with them. Love it, and would buy them again.
