4Buy accessories with caution
By Retired
This is another quality 18V cordless tool... happy to see Makita continuing to expand the line.Due to Makita's extremely limited selection of accessories for this tool I opted to rely on Fein compatible accessories. This requires using one of the two adapters provided (proprietary fittings, grrrr!). (The other adapter is for Bosch.)Two problems of note:1) The adapters are about the size of a fat half-dollar... and they're loose. You're going to lose one... (Replacements aren't readily available, requiring a special order... I may use LocTite... if I do then I can't use the accessories shipped with the tool.)2) So far I've found one accessory that won't fit... Fein 63901025060 Mini Cut and File Set. Fein compatible accessories with a large flat surface will work. This "mini" set is too small for the adapter to fit flush against.

5If you are wondering if you will use it...Buy It, You Will.
By C. Bird
I have always wondered if i would use one of these tools. So when i had a job come up that i noticed it would be pretty much essential, i decided to take the plung. I ordered it in a kit so i could add 2 more batteries and a charger to my tool bags. I own about 12 makita lxt tools, and now have 3 chargers and 8 batteries. I couldn't be happier with each tool, and this one is no exception.I purchased it in conjunction with the versa-tool 15 piece saw set for another $60, and on the first day owning it I: plunge cut out a bottom of a decaying kitchen sink cabinet, cut out drywall extreemly fast and easily, cut through copper pipe with virtually no damage to allow a new sweat coupler, shaved off debris from some stock, and sanded off grout from a tub. Everything that needs to be done in tight quarters is better done with this tool. It will not wholesale replace a jigsaw or a recip saw, or a circ saw or even an orbitial sander, but it will do the job better than any of those tools when you need it in a small space, and without a cord.No complaints on my part of battery life, everyone knows that a grinder, or saw eats up battery. I didn't feel frustrated when it was time to change it, it worked like a champ with no back talking.I like the tool so much i think i am going to get my free bare tool in another multi-tool.Quick not on versa-tool blades, great set of blades, can't say anything about wear. but any craftsman knows extra blades on hand is a must. save yourself some pain and get a good set right off the bat, and the makita storage box that comes with this set works well at keeping them together.

5Did my homework. Hitachi drills were the right purchase...
By Teddy Westmoreland
Got this combo kit last Thursday. Used the impact drill to drive (7) 1/2 X 4 inch lag screws into a 2X10 ledger. Then used the power drill to drill various 2.5 and 3 inch deck screws into the ledger/joist hangers for a deck extension. Then used the power drill with an auger attachment to pre-drill my 16 inch wide by 16 inches deep holes in the ground for my deck footing piers. Drill did not die. Just backed out of tree roots and then kept going. Started at 7am and the power drill battery died on me at 6:30pm. Switched to the impact drills battery and kept digging holes. Charged the dead battery, but by quitin time (8:15pm) didn't need to change the 2nd battery. This is exactly the type of performance that I wanted. Though I'm by electricity, I did not want to hassle with corded tools (other then my handy chopsaw). Got the circular saw and reciprocating saw coming enroute through Fed Ex tomorrow. After the rain passes by Wed of this week, I should be able to test the way the batteries last with the circular saw/sawzall. Got some 6 X 6 posts, 2X10X12 & 2X4's to rip.Judging by how the batteries performed with drilling the holes for the piers, I'm expecting them to allow for quite a number of rips. I think I'm getting my monies worth ouot of the drills, that's for sure.IT WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE HOW EASY THE IMPACT DRILL DROVE IN THE LAG SCREWS. EASY.The 3 inch deck screws went into the treated lumber like it was slicing through butter. REALLY.The battery life is AWESOME. I wanted the Makita tools. After reading up on Hitachi and now having used them, I don't regret passing on the higher priced Makita tools.

5Best Drills!! Look No Further
By Eli Saravia
Bought these a few months ago and they are wonderful drills. The impact wrench has AMAZING power. It's hard to believe how much power that little thing can put out. I used an older Hitachi impact wrench at work until it went missing over a weekend. It must have been the one tool with the most demand at the work site. I replace it a couple of days later by buying this two-piece set here at Amazon. I would advice you to consider buying the two separately, that way for only $70 more you end up with 4 batteries and 2 chargers (each one is worth over $100!!) In the set you only get 2 batteries and 1 charger. Either way the drills are just amazing!! Be prepared to have everybody at work coming around trying to borrow them! Enjoy!!

4Hitachi... Worth it?... I think so.
By Obi
I compared the Makita, Milwaukee, and this Hitachi. All were Li-ion, all are 18volt, all were combo sets. For the drill, what I found was the Makita had 450in-lbs torque. The Milwaukee had 400 in-lbs, and the Hitachi has 560in-lbs. The Impact driver for the Makita has around 1270in-lbs and the Milwaukee has 1400in-lbs. The Hitachi has 1330. The Hitachi also has a "power" button on the grip. Push up to get the full popwer of the tool, push down to "S" and you'll save battery life. What I've noticed is that the rpm's are slower. It lacked nothing on torque for what I was doing (driving Tapcons). At the time I purchased this, the Makita was around $300 (+/- a few bucks) and the Hitachi was $284. The Milwaukee was $199. I chose the Hitachi for the increase in torque over the others.I've used the Makita at work and I like it as well. Both the Hitachi and the Makita have led lights to help out in dark corners. The Hitachi has an orange color and the Makita has a bluish white color. The Makita turns on automatically when you depress the trigger and stays on a few seconds after you release it. The Hitachi has a small button you use to enable the light on or off. I don't recall reading that the Milwaukee had a light, it may, but I'm not sure.Any cons with the Hitachi? A few, just enough that I didn't give 5 stars. These are just "picky" problems and take nothing away from the abilities of this drill.One... it weighs a bit less than the Makita and feels "slightly" less durable. The Makita has a bit more rugged feel to it.Two... the charger takes longer than the 15 minute charger for the Makita. I've not timed it exactly, but it's between 1/2 hr to 45 min to recharge.Three... This is just a bit of a nuisense, but according to Hitachi's description page, it's a drill protection thing. When the drill needs recharged, it flat out stops. I'd finish driving one screw and the time it takes to place another screw on the bit and pull the trigger... it won't run. This can be a buggar depending on what you're doing.Four... I'd prefer a hard case instead of a bag, but that's just me.I would definitely recommend this combo kit. I'm a carpenter and it does whatever I throw at it. Also, on Hitachi's description page it let's you know that there is a 10 year warranty on the drivers and a 2 year on the batteries.

5Can't go wrong
By A Customer
It's a great tool. Seems to deliver plenty of variable power and the batteries last plenty of time. (I'm surprised by the earlier reviewers experience.) I went to 2 different Home Depot's and both salesmen recommended the Makita. Another friend was endeared to DeWalt, but admitted that most salesmen he talked to also recommended the Makita. The main reason is that it's easier to change the gears, or something like that. But you'll probably have no problems, as it's an obviously well made tool with all of the important features. Consumer Reports also rated it high. I'm certainly no tool expert, yet this tool is great for the do-it-yourselfer doing odd jobs around the house. The main dilemma is whether 9.6 volts is enough, or 12 or 14.4. Also, I wish the tool would have a lower profile (i.e. able to get into smaller areas), but that problem is endemic among all other tools in its class.

5Ultimate Tool for the TV Remodeling Addict
By A Customer
Creme de la Creme of Cordless Screwdriver/Drills. Balance and weight at optimum. Higher voltage products seem clubby. Infinite speed control. Especially low speed for starting fasteners & drill bits accurately. Has the high speed for small bits and drywall fasteners. Batteries really have a lot of punch, and recharge quickly. The flash light makes all others obsolete. It has a Buzillion foot lumburts for the foggiest mid-life eyeballs. It actually stands up and STAYS where you piont it. A third hand for sure!

3THINK TWICE
By Buddha's Ghost
Makita has taken a step in the right direction with their new generation of drill, namely the contoured comfort and balance. There is a big "HOWEVER" to take notice of. I've owned one of these drills for well over a year and use it extensively on a daily basis. Problem 1: The new batteries just don't live up to their reputation. Their charge is short lived and when it drains ,man does it go fast.____Problem 2: The torque setting switch on the top of the drill grows weak after some usage, allowing it to fall out of it's setting and causing clutch slippage. I've witnessed this on at least three of these style drills. NO GOOD!________Problem 3:And lastly for the drill, the chuck shaft gets loose and sloppy after it gets a few miles on it. Makita needs some further development on this item to make it worthy of their old style drills. And not to forget the flashlight, it's not bad and my only gripe is the fact that after awhile the adjustable pivot head gets loose allowing the electrical contacts inside to intermittently "not contact" causing the light to cut on and off. For infrequent use this set is an okay buy with a good price, but if you want a drill for frequent usage look elsewhere.

5Great cordless tool kit
By Watson
I thought long and hard about buying a cordless tool kit. I am a home repair guy and there is usually electricity available, so why go for cordless? It's one of those things where you just have to try it to realize that it is a real time saver as well as being safer and even more versatile in certain situations. The tools in the DeWalt kit work very well and are very easy to use. They appear durable and well made. This has been my experience with the DeWalt products that I have used. I am very glad that I got this product.

5Powerful and Rugged
By Michael Poirier
I am a part time carpenter and handyman and after a few years of debating I finally stepped up and purchased this Dewalt Set. WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG :) I find it has 3x the power and battery life of Ryobi or Prter Cable, more durable than Milwaukee and is better priced than Makita. The set came with two extra batteries (total of 4) a $130 dollar value at Home Depot. Overall an excellent product at a great price.

1Amazon specified NiMh batteries, but it has NiCd batteries
By stormy
I looked specifically for a drill with NiMh batteries since they last longer and can be charged from half discharged, unlike NiCd.The product specs on Amazon's website said NiMh batteries. However the drill came with NiCd, and when I looked at the Makita website, they spec NiCd.This was very disappointing. SInce this is a gift and was time critical, I was no able to return it.I am very disappointed in Amazon, and if I get anything from them in the future, I will be sure to check the specs of the actual manufacturer, instead of believing Amazon

Got tired of cheeping out on "budget" cordless drills and got the one everyone else spent the big bucks on. The quick charge charger is great. 30 minutes instead of over night.

5Makita makes the best drills
By J.O.
Purchased for small projects around the house and have been very satisfied. My dad had a Makita previously that he loved, and eventually gave to my brother-in-law when he got a Ryobi heavy duty cordless drill. He wishes he would have gifted the Ryobi and not the Makita... This Makita is perfect for light duty jobs. Not too heavy or bulky to where you can easily maneuver and won't wear out your arms holding up a heavier drill. Worked great to drill holes and install cabinet hardware in our kitchen and bathrooms. Would purchase again.

5Dewalt 18V combo DCK470L
By John H. Bragg
So far, the drill/driver has been the only tool I have used, but it works quite well. I am a bit concerned about the case, as it will require some practice to get the tools back into the exact spot in order to close the case. This is a difference from my previous Dewalt combination set. Obviously these are very good tools; this is the second set I have had to replace due to robbery. The drill has very good power and performed quite well. The chuck is a new design, so I believe some time will have to pass before longevity can be verified.

5Dewalt Performance Awesome
By R. Kisic
I bought the nailer to install 3/4 inch wood flooring. Using the 16 gauge nailer, I was able to fire 2 inch brads throught the tongue of african rosewood flooring. A flooring nailer is recommended for this job but I was able to accurately hit the sweet spot above the tongue every time. African rosewood is much harder than oak and the nailer handled the job without a problem. I also like the versatility of having the 18 gauge nailer which I used to shoot 1-1/2 inch brads through quarter round molding. This unit is light weight but has plenty of power. For $300, it is well worth the price.

4Dewalt Compressor/nail gun combo
By Steve Mosher
I do a lot of drywall repair and re-texturing of ceilings & wall areas. I had to replace my old compressor which weighed 50 lbs and was looking for something easier to carry. This compressor works fine, is easy to carry but does run low on compression sometimes because of the small tank. This has not been a problem for me because it does recover quite quickly. I have really enjoyed the compressor in my day to day work and have also used both nail guns on a couple of projects. They worked well and made my jobs so much easier. I am really glad that I made the purchase.

5Excellent All Around
By J. Madden
This is my first air compressor but I have had the privilege of using many different portable air compressors (most of them Porter Cable) and this is my favorite. I originally bought this set with general carpentry projects in mind, and I am very glad I did.Air Compressor Pros:1. Fills quickly.2. 2 hose connections are very helpful3. Metal plate on top protects the motor.4. Stands up on back for storage so it takes up less floor space.5. My favorite drain valve I have ever seen on any compressor.6. Easy to carry.7. Good placement of power switch on the back.Air Compressor Cons:1. 2 Gallon air tank does not allow for much storage.2. CFM rate is not high enough to use a spray gun for more than short bursts.Nail Gun Pros:1. Both nail guns have easy built in safety locks above the triggers.2. Biggest finish nailer I have ever seen come in an air compressor set.3. Finish nailer has a good belt clip.4. The finish nailer once got pulled off my belt and fell onto concrete pavers and did not get a single scratch.Nail Gun Cons:1. When you first get the guns they do not come with the hose connectors installed. (They do come with the connectors and Teflon tape but you must put them in.) To protect the guns from any particles falling into them, the guns come with plastic inserts which are almost impossible to remove.2. The trigger bump on the brad nailer gets jammed in the upright position sometimes.Accessories:It came with two accessories I was not aware of at the time of purchase. A single bag big enough for both nailers, the 25' hose included, gun oil, and boxes of nails. It also came with very cheep feeling safety goggles, DPG54M-1D. It did NOT come with gun oil, so to my surprise I had to make a quick trip to the local home depot and buy a $2ish bottle of oil. Also included are the 25' air hose and a bump action trigger (Which I have not used yet).Other Notes:1. As you should realize, this kit does NOT come with a staple gun. That can be problematic in some furniture building, especially when applying lewan backing.2. I bought a 50' hose so I could have two tools attached at the same time and it really comes in handy.3. You will also want an air gun. They are great for cleaning off sawdust. Also, as I discovered in PC support at school, the air guns are great for cleaning out 8 years of dust from computers.
